Park To Park 1M Swim
Hudson River
Sunday, August 1, 2004

A grey sky and light rain didn't dampen spirits early last Sunday morning as five NYU TriClub stalwarts joined 114 other swimmers for some swim time in the Hudson. The P2P is one of the Hudson River Swim Series events which range from the .5M Cove 2To Cove Swim to the 7.8M Little Red Lighthouse Swim. Those looking for a real challenge participate in the 26+ mile Manhattan Island Marathon Swim which circumnavigates the island of Manhattan.

The Park to Park course starts at South Cove near Battery Park City and ends at Pier , the home of the Downtown Boathouse. Since the Hudson River is tidal, race completion times are as often influenced more by the timing of the event as the conditioning of the individual swimmers. This year, the conditions gave swimmers a "fair" mile, meaning that the current was not an aid!

Marcia Saito Eckel was fresh from serious swimming in azure Hawaiian waters. She may have found the river to be a little bit cold and just a tad grimy in comparison, but obviously it didn't slow her down. John Towsen chose to wear his wetsuit again despite the recent appearance of additional holes in the torso and legs. He is so strong that he needs a neoprene drag suit to slow him down. John, time to invest in some neoprene glue or at least duct tape. Sonia, Leigh, and Robin Nagle also had good times. The rain was not an issue to the swimmers until the post-event wards ceremony. The drenching downpour was no worry for those swimmers who were still wet from the swim, or wearing their wetsuits….

Congratulations to all of our swimmers. Robin and John placed second in their age groups. Leigh placed 5th.
