RACE REPORT
Despite the forecasted torrential downpours from tropical storm Charlie hitting the race course at precisely start time, the only fluids on event day were the lake in which we swam, the fluids in our bike bottles and plenty of hard-earned sweat.
The transition area was set up in its usual location for the second NY TRI. The completion times for this second event are typically 4-5 minutes slower than the earlier June event due to the longer transition from swim to bike. The stoney surface in the transition area definitely did not help. The swim course was flat and packed with over 275 human weed-whackers. The growth of a dense bed of weeds to within 2 feet of the surface kept swim times slow and many of the athletes exiting the water looked like extras from Creature From The Black Lagoon.
Fortunately, the bike course was free from debris. Alas, it was not free from inclines or declines. This 16M course is flat for maybe 25% of its course. The rest is UP or DOWN, including an uphill climb of 3 miles. This is not a fast bike course. The same cannot be said of the run course. It's flat profile offered no excuses for slow runners.
Many thanks to our stellar support team. Yael Goverover, Marcia Saito-Eckel and John Eckel were excellent athletic supporters. Photos of the event are provided courtesy of John.
And what of our team's performance?
This was the first race in a few years for your coach and the old adage "the older you get, the faster you were" proved true. Treachery may be the only remaining resort for a fast completion time. This was the first trip to the hills of Harriman State Park for Elizabeth, Hector and Carlo. They unanimously agreed that the hills of Central Park are MOLEHILLS. Despite the difficulty of the bike course, they all finished well with Elizabeth placing second in her age-group. She took home her first ever triathlon hardware, soon to be displayed on her parents mantelpiece. I expect there to be many more. Elizabeth should continue the fine tradition of women in the NYU TRICLUB. John Towsen may have had the most memorable performance due to his one of a kind lycra shorts. Bernie Goldschmidt's performance was equally memorable and earned him first place in his age group. The photo of him with his bike in the hardest gear exiting the transition area completely disproves my theory of spinning to warm-up the legs. I suspect that he didn't shift once during the bike leg. Shachar Gonen had the displeasure of his coaches company throughout the run, but it kept him moving fast.
All in all, another great performance for the NYU TRICLUB.
