JUST CALL 'EM THE VOLUN-CHEERLEADERS
The gals from New York University's cheer squad are making community
service a significant part of their program this year. "After September
11, everyone wanted to be more proactive," says senior captain Claudia
Allwood. In mid-December, the squad teamed up with the dance team
to lend their spirit and time, working at a winter wonderland party
for children who lost parents in the WTC attacks. If you caught ABC's
hour-long special, "Challenge America with Erin Brokovich: The Miracle
in Manhattan," you may have seen them in action.
As documented on the show, Erin was asked to coordinate the restoration
of lower Manhattan's East River Park (an area that includes an amphitheater
and soccer field), then organize a holiday party there for thousands
of people in just one week! And the squad was up to the challenge.
"The amphitheater looks great now," says Claudia. "We had a lot of
fun decorating the tent, making fake snow, running around with the
kids and working the booths all day."
