On Monday, June 7, 2004, Lauren Henkel (Steinhardt School of Education) was presented with the New York University Alumni Association Student Athlete of the Year Award. The award is bestowed upon an outstanding graduate who has exemplified excellence both on and off the playing field. Thomas Wysmuller (ARTS ’66), president of the NYU Alumni Association, NYU’s umbrella organization for all University alumni, presented the award to Lauren at the Association’s annual meeting, which was held in the Kimmel Center for University Life.
Henkel, who majored in studio art and minored in Irish studies, will be remembered as one of the University’s greatest all-around athletes. Not only was she a three-time NCAA All-American in track & field, she also earned All-America recognition as a member of NYU’s women’s soccer team.
Over the course of her four-year career, Henkel earned NCAA All-America honors in the high jump three times and was named NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America) All-American Northeast Region First Team as a junior. That season, the Violets won their first-ever University Athletic Association Championship and qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time ever.
In addition to the 11 track & field records she owns or shares, Henkel was a UAA Champion nine times. In soccer, she was chosen UAA Athlete of the Week four times, First Team All-UAA as a senior, and a New York All-State forward as a junior.
A native of Rockville Centre, NY, Henkel has earned other prestigious awards during her NYU career, including the Varsity Club Freshman Athlete of the Year Award (2000-01), the NYU President’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award (2002-03), the Dan Quilty/NIT Scholar-Athlete Award (2002-03), and the NYSWCAA Scholar-Athlete Award (2003-04).
