New York University women’s volleyball player Katya Khmelnitskaya was awarded ECAC Player of the Week honors, while women’s soccer player Lauren Henkel and men’s tennis player Richard Salem each earned University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week recognition for the week of September 15-21.
Khmelnitskaya, a sophomore setter from Addison, Illinois, tallied 19 kills, 148 set assists, five aces, 38 digs, and seven service aces as NYU won all five of its matches en route to winning the Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational Championship. Khmelnitskaya, who recorded a career-high 18 digs against SUNY-Brockport, helped the Violets improve their record to 20-0 and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Henkel, a senior from Rockville Center, NY, helped NYU to an undefeated weekend, scoring all three goals in a victory over Vassar College on Saturday, and then adding an assist on Sunday in the Violets’ 2-0 win against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Salem, a senior from Honolulu, Hawaii, went 3-0 over the weekend to capture the second singles draw at the 2003 ECAC North Championships held at Vassar College. After winning his first two matches in straight sets, Salem scored a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 victory in the championship match. Earlier in the week, Salem helped the Violets defeat Vassar College 7-0 by winning his #2 singles match and # 1 doubles match.
