Three New York University athletes have been honored as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week; junior Jennifer Gardikas (women’s volleyball), freshman John Pharr (men’s golf), and senior Richard Salem (men’s tennis) were all chosen on September 8th.
Gardikas led the Violets to a first-place finish at the Ithaca College Invitational last weekend. She stepped up for NYU in the championship match, attacking Concordia-Moorhead College with 17 kills, 13 digs, three aces, and two blocks. Gardikas totaled 84 kills, 42 digs, seven blocks, and seven service aces in the Violets’ five matches. For her efforts, Gardikas was also named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Pharr helped lead NYU to a fourth-place team finish at the St. Lawrence University Invitational last weekend. Making his Violet debut, Pharr shot a NYU-best two day total of 149 (78-71), which led him to a fifth-place individual finish in a field of 53 competitors.
Salem and the Violets opened their season at the Lions’ Fall Kickoff at the College of New Jersey last weekend. Salem won both of his matches at second singles, cruising through opponents from the College of New Jersey and Carnegie Mellon University. In the second day of competition, Salem teamed with Ian Corn to win both matches at first doubles. Salem is currently undefeated at 4-0.
