Two Violets Earn UAA Athlete Of The Week Honors

Two New York University athletes earned University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week accolades this week. Senior Michael Bonacuso of the men’s soccer team and sophomore Katya Khmelnitskaya of the women’s volleyball team were honored.

Bonacuso, the Violets’ goalkeeper, led NYU to a 0-0 tie in their season opener against Stevens Institute of Technology on August 30. The unruffled goalie lasted into two overtimes and registered 10 saves in his 110 minutes of play for the Violets.

Khmelnitskaya helped NYU capture the Oneonta State Red Dragon Invitational championship on August 29-30. She was a presence for the Violets in the semifinal match when she recorded 35 assists, eight digs and six kills. Khmelnitskaya went on to add 41 set assists in the championship game against the University of Rochester and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The men’s soccer team is currently 0-0-1, while the NYU’s women’s volleyball team remains undefeated at 5-0.
