Former NYU Administrator/Basketball Player Carnevale Passes Away at 92

Ben Carnevale, who served as New York University’s Athletic Director from 1966-1972 and played for the Violets’ basketball team passed away last Tuesday at the age of 92.

Carnevale, who was born in Raritan, New Jersey, was a member of NYU’s 1935 Helms Foundation National Championship team. He also played in the first National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in Madison Square Garden in 1938.

Carnevale graduated in 1938 and was inducted into the NYU Hall of Fame in 1976 and into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970.

Carnevale professionally with the Jersey Reds of the American Basketball League and served in the Navy during World War II, earning the Purple Heart.

Carnevale, who also served as the Athletic Director at the College of William & Mary from 1972-82, was the head men’s basketball coach at the University of North Carolina (1944-46) and at the United States Naval Academy (1946-66).

After retiring from William & Mary, Carnevale helped organize the Colonial Athletic Association and served as commissioner for the league. He also served as chairman of the United States Olympic Basketball Committee from 1964-68.

Carnevale is survived by his wife of 65 years, Agnes Curran Carnevale, a daughter and four sons.
