Four All-America performances and the shattering of three school records highlighted New York University's performance on the first day of the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at Miami University in Oxford, OH.
After several strong opening efforts, the Violets are ranked seventh in the team race with 54 points.
Senior Brad Thornton participated in two record-breaking efforts. After clocking a Violet all-time best 1:52.79 in the preliminaries, he placed eighth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:54.26 in the championship finals.
Thornton then became an 11-time All-American by swimming a leg on the standard-shattering 200-yard freestyle relay that placed fifth in 1:22.00. Thornton teamed with junior Eric Pcholinski, senior Christopher Wolff and junior Andrew Lardiere advanced to Thursday evening's finals and secured All-America honors.
On that relay, Lardiere swam a 50-yard freestyle relay split of 19.78 seconds, the first time a NYU swimmer broke the 20-second mark in the 50 freestyle. It was also the second fastest split on Thursday.
Thornton also was part of the 400-yard medley relay along with senior Matthew Ferreira, junior Eric Wang and senior Christopher Wolff that placed 14th in 3:28.68 and garnered Honorable Mention All-America honors. In the prelims, the Violets posted a time of 3:28.47, with Pcholinski swimming the freestyle leg in the Violets' first race in that event Thursday.
Finally, Lardiere surpassed his previous school record in the 50-yard freestyle, earning Honorable Mention All-America accolades with a clocking of 20.46 seconds to take ninth in the nation. His previous best time was 20.64 seconds at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, which established a UAA all-time mark.
Also participating Thursday for NYU was senior Paul Hogan, who took 26th in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 4:38.15.
