NYU Wrestling Earns Academic Honors
03/18/08
The New York University wrestling team was rewarded for its academic excellence by being named as one of the 2007-08 NCAA Division III Scholar Top-25 Wrestling Teams.
NYU head coach Bruce Haberli’s team ranked fourth in the nation with a team cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.477, behind only Coe College (3.481), Olivet College (3.497), and top-ranked Williams College (3.528).
When compiling the list, The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) combines the GPA’s of 10 wrestlers from each team, six of whom must have competed in the national qualifying tournament. All of the wrestlers considered when comprising the team GPA’s must have competed in at least 50% of their school’s NCAA sanctioned events.
In addition to the team award, four NYU individuals were named to the 2007-08 NWCA Division III Scholar All-American Wrestling Team.
Senior co-captain Nick Coleman, who is majoring in digital communications in NYU’s School of Continuing & Professional Studies, was named to the list for a second straight season, with a GPA of 3.553. Juniors Patrick Knight, majoring in nursing in NYU’s College of Nursing, and Naum Shuminov, majoring in economics in the School of Continuing & Professional Studies, received accolades for the first time with GPA’s of 3.452 and 3.344, respectively. Sophomore Kyle Christensen, who is in NYU’s General Studies Program, made the list for the first time with a GPA of 3.443.
In order to qualify for the award, a wrestler must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20, and either: be a national qualifier with a winning percentage of .500 or better; be a placewinner at a national qualifying tournament with a minimum .500 win/loss record; post an overall season winning percentage of .670 or better and have competed in at least 50% of the institution’s NCAA sanctioned competitions.
The NWCA considers grades from the Spring 2007 and Fall 2007 semesters to compile the cumulative GPA’s of the wrestlers.
NYU’s outstanding academic achievements were equaled by their athletic achievements, as the program had its best-ever national finish (12th place at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships) and produced two All-Americans (seniors Stephen Hult and Takafumi Hashimoto).
