02/26/08
After several stellar performances last weekend at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming and Diving Championships, New York University junior Andrew Lardiere and freshman Max Norris swept the UAA and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week awards.
Lardiere also collected the 2008 UAA Swimmer of the Year award after becoming the first-ever Association swimmer to sweep the three freestyle sprint events: the 50-yard (20.86), 100-yard (45.54) and 200-yard (1:40.98). The junior from Walnut Creek, CA, made an NCAA "A" cut in the 50 freestyle by posting a UAA-record time of 20.64 in the preliminaries. He established new NYU records in both the 50 and 100 freestyle.
However, Lardiere also excelled as part of the Violets' four victorious relay teams: 200 freestyle relay (NYU and UAA record 1:22.86), 200 medley relay (1:32.98), 400 freestyle relay (3:04.26), and 400 medley relay (NYU record 3:26.59). NYU earned an NCAA "A" cut in the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays, while making "B" cuts in the 400 freestyle and 400 medley relays.
In his first-ever UAA Championships appearance, Norris captured the UAA Diver of the Year accolade after sweeping the one-meter (447.84 points) and three-meter (468.65) springboards. Performing before his hometown crowd at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, his performance in the three-meter dive helped him in his bid qualify for the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, beginning March 20 at Miami University in Oxford, OH.
