Men's Volleyball's Hodgson Earns a Pair of Awards

New York University freshman middle blocker Francis Hodgson was named the Sports Imports/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Division III National Player of the Week and the EIVA (Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) Hay Division Player of the Week on Monday, February 25.

Hodgson helped lead the Violets (10-5, 2-1 EIVA Hay) to a 3-0 week including two victories over Hay Division opponents. In the team’s first match of the week, a 3-0 victory over NCAA Division II University of New Haven, Hodgson notched seven kills while hitting .500 with three total blocks. He followed that with his strongest performance of the season in NYU’s 3-2 come-from-behind win over Division I Harvard University. For the match, Hodgson registered a double-double with 18 kills and 11 total blocks while hitting .533. He finished the week with a five-kill, two-block performance in a 3-0 win over then-#14 Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

For the week, the Surf City, New Jersey, native averaged 2.73 kills, 1.45 blocks and 3.91 points per game while hitting .481.

Hodgson is only the seventh freshman to receive AVCA Division III Player of the Week honors since the award was introduced in 2000.

For the season, the freshman is averaging 2.02 kills per game and 1.43 blocks per game while hitting .470. His hitting percentage currently ranks third in Division III, while his blocking currently ranks fourth.

The Violets are currently ranked #5 in the most recent CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division III Men’s Coaches Top 15 Poll.
