Two members of NYU's Sport Taekwondo Team brought home medals after competing in the UCLA Taekwondo Open, an intercollegiate Taekwondo tournament in the West Coast Taekwondo League on January 20.

Richard Peterson, a senior in the College of Arts and Science, captured the gold medal in the men's heavyweight division, while Emily Shedletsky, a graduate student in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education & Human Development, won the silver medal in the women's heavyweight division.

The tournament took place after the two trained for three days with the UCLA, USC, Pepperdine University, and University of California-San Diego Collegiate Taekwondo Programs. The duo was selected to participate after being named to the Ivy/Northeast Collegiate Taekwondo League (INCTL) All-Star Team.

“This is a great honor for these athletes and for NYU,” said NYU head coach Timothy Marmo. “It’s great to see their all their effort and hard work rewarded.”

Peterson, a native of Siren, Wisconsin, who is majoring in history and East Asian studies, and Shedletsky, a Brooklyn, NY, native who is pursing a master’s degree in international education and development, are the first NYU Sport Taekwondo team members to be selected to the INCTL All-Star Team since Gideon Lin was chosen during the 2001-02 season.
