Women's Hoops' McEntee Grabs Pair of Weekly Accolades
12/11/07
For the second consecutive week, New York University junior forward Jessica McEntee was named the PrestoSports/Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Player of the Week and the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week.
McEntee is the only Division III player ever to capture the PrestoSports/MBWA award in consecutive weeks, having also done so Jan. 15, 2007 before repeating on Jan. 27.
Meanwhile, the 5-11 native of Flushing, NY, shared the UAA weekly award with Brandeis University's Jaime Capra. It is the third time this season McEntee has been cited by the Association.
McEntee averaged 24.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals while shooting 61.5% (16-for-26) from the floor and a perfect 16-for-16 from the charity stripe in road wins over Oswego State College (67-48 on Dec. 4) and Drew University (86-70 on Dec. 8).
After going for 18 points and 12 rebounds at Oswego State, McEntee tallied 31 points and 11 boards while going 13-for-13 at the foul line at Drew. Her performance against Drew increased her consecutive free throws streak to a school-record 27, surpassing her previous mark of 24 set Feb. 2-9, 2007.
McEntee is already the most proficient free-throw shooter in Violet history, hitting 81.9% (349-for-426) of her tries. She is seven makes away from eclipsing the career mark set by two-time All-American Marsha Harris (355, 1994-98).
Thus far, McEntee has earned six weekly awards. In 2006-07, she garnered 25 en route to being named an All-American by three organizations (D3hoops.com, Kodak/Women's Basketball Coaches Association,
Women's DIII News) and Player of the Year by four organizations (D3hoops.com - East Region, MBWA, New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association, UAA) after averaging 16.9 points and 12.5 rebounds per game.
