The 2007-08 season will feature the debut of women’s golf as a varsity sport at New York University. It becomes the 19th team to compete under the NYU varsity banner.
Newly named men’s and women’s head golf coach, Chris Kosiba, who also serves as a women’s basketball assistant coach at NYU, will lead the squad.
The team will begin competition during the fall season with expectations to field a complete roster in time for the 2008-09 season.
“New York University is thrilled to add the sport of women’s golf to our varsity sport offerings,” said NYU’s Director of Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation, Christopher Bledsoe. “Under Coach Kosiba’s direction the future of NYU golf for women and men is indeed bright.”
Kosiba served as the acting head coach of the men’s team during the 2007 spring season and led the Violets to victories at the MIT Jack Barry Invitational and at the Stevens Institute of Technology Invitational. He also guided the team to a second-place finish at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship.
A 1997 graduate of Guilford College with a degree in exercise and sports science, Kosiba has served as an assistant coach in the women’s basketball program since the beginning of the 2003-04 season. During his tenure, the Violets have posted a 91-21 record and have made three trips to the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament, including an appearance in the Final Four in 2007.
NYU will become the first school in the UAA to field a women’s golf team. Currently there are 158 NCAA Division III women’s golf programs.
