NYU Athletes Earn Weekly Honors

Seven NYU athletes received honors for their performances during the week ending September 11.

Three members of the women's volleyball team were honored by the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association. Senior Jennifer Gardikas was awarded Player of the Week after being named to the Ithaca Bomber Invitational All-Tournament Team. She recorded 55 kills, 33 digs and 12 aces over four games during the tournament. Gardikas also recorded a career-high 23 kills in the Violets’ 3-2 victory over MIT.

Junior Elena Drinka, who was named MVP at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational, was selected NYSWCAA Offensive Player of the Week. She recorded a team-high 60 kills and added 17 blocks. The NYSWCAA Rookie of the Week Award went to NYU freshman Caitlin Grundman, who tallied 76 assists, 37 digs and 21 kills over the four-game tournament.

In addition, three NYU athletes were named University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week in their various sports.

Chris Wright, a freshman goalkeeper for the men's soccer team, was rewarded for his role in the Violets' two victories including a win over #12 ranked Rowan. Wright recorded a career-high 10 saves in the game against Rowan.

Women's tennis member Alex Leddy was honored for her efforts, which included a perfect 5-0 record and the “D” flight singles title at The College of New Jersey Lions’ Fall Kickoff Invitational. Also receiving the UAA award was freshman Craig Berger, a member of the Violets’ men's tennis team. Berger won the "B" flight championship after going 3-0 at The College of New Jersey Lions’ Fall Kickoff Invitational. Both Leddy and Berger were competing in their first collegiate athletic competition.

The East Coast Athletic Conference named sophomore Katie Barnes the Metro Women's Soccer Goaltender of the Week. During the period, Katie recorded two shutouts, including a 1-0 win over MIT and a 110-minute scoreless tie with Vassar. Katie also tallied a career-high 12 saves in a 1-0 loss to Stevens Tech in the championship of the Engineering Cup.
