Four New York University student-athletes have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic At-Large All-America Team, as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). The teams were announced on Thursday, May 26, 2005.

NYU graduate student Brian Berkey of the golf team was named to the District I First Team, while senior Matthew Cull (swimming), and juniors Erika Norris (swimming) and Gabriel Sinkin (fencing) were selected to the Second Team.

In order to be considered for this award, nominees must be a starter or important reserve on their athletic team, have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.

Berkey, a philosophy major with a GPA of 3.90, helped the NYU golf team qualify for the NCAA Division III Championship in each of the last two years. He was the Violets’ low-scorer at the Championships in 2004, finishing in 44th place overall. In 2005, Berkey was the team’s second-low scorer finishing in a tie for 93rd place.

All District First Team selections are then considered for national honors. In 2004, Berkey was selected as a CoSIDA District I First Team At-Large Academic All-American and went on to earn Third Team All-America honors at the national level.

Cull, a film major with a 3.64 GPA, recorded a 10th-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly and earned Honorable Mention All-American status at the 2005 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships. It was the fourth time he has earned either All-America or Honorable Mention All-America honors during his NYU career. Also this season, Cull won five events at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Winter Championships, which helped propel NYU to a first-place team finish.

Norris, a graphic design/studio art major with a 3.57 GPA, earned All-America honors for the third consecutive year with a seventh-place finish in the 400-yard individual at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships. A four-time University Athletic Association (UAA) champion, Norris also won five events at the ECAC Winter Championships, as the NYU women also won the team title.

Sinkin, a computer science major with a 3.56 GPA, earned the silver medal in foil competition at the 2005 NCAA Fencing Championships. He was named the NCAA Championships Outstanding Fencer, and also won the NCAA Northeast Regional Foil Championship. In addition, Sinkin finished fifth at the Olympic Trials in 2004 and missed qualifying for the United States Olympic Team by one spot.
