Academic Advising
Academic Advising is a fundamental element of every student’s experience in the Core Program of Liberal Studies. Thus, each Core Program student is assigned both a Liberal Studies faculty mentor and a Liberal Studies professional academic advisor. Students are urged to take advantage of the advising opportunities made available by arranging for regular visits with their faculty mentor and their professional academic advisor.
Faculty mentors engage students in conversations about the Core Program curriculum, its relation to their undergraduate experience, and its intended impact on lifelong intellectual and professional pursuits. They often focus their relationship on guiding students to realistic academic goals, encouraging self-reliance and making informed decisions. Faculty mentors are also interested in discussions about student interests, aspirations, and new perspectives on meaning and life.
Professional academic advisors provide students practical information about how to understand the Core Program curriculum and the administrative aspects of class selection and registration. They offer advice about how to navigate the various administrative offices at NYU and the complexities of NYU policies and procedures. Professional academic advisors have current information regarding other programs and schools at NYU, how to prepare for declaring a major, and transition to the degree granting program in the junior year. They can also provide comprehensive information about university-wide student support services.
