Now in its third year, the Senior Class Legacy Program continues to promote class involvement and leadership benefiting the entire New York University student body. Last year, the Class of 2004 raised over $13,000 for The Fund for NYU through the Program. This year, the Class of 2005 hopes to do even better and leave a lasting legacy in the form of increased funding for study abroad programs.

The Senior Class Legacy Program is a new take on giving at NYU. It offers graduating seniors the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of future generations of NYU students simply by making a gift to the annual fund of their individual school. The money donated by students to their schools through the program goes directly to that school, but the total amount donated by seniors is matched by President John Sexton and used to fund a Legacy Project chosen by the senior class.

Different Legacy Projects are chosen each year, so each class has the opportunity to leave its own unique mark on the University. In the program’s first year, seniors used the funds to welcome new freshmen with an unforgettable beach-themed party. The following year the Class of 2004 chose to allocate President Sexton’s matching funds toward the continued improvement of the lounge in the newly renovated B-Level of Bobst Library. The Lounge, which was dedicated last winter, will bear a plaque in honor of the Class of 2004.

The Legacy of the Class of 2005 will be no less unique than those of previous classes. They have recently voted to designate President Sexton’s matching funds to go toward supporting study abroad stipends. The Office of Global Studies will administer this yearly stipend to students who desire to study abroad, but need a little help to make it happen. The amount of the stipend and number of students it will benefit will be based on the amount the class raises.
