Dorothy I. Height (Steinhardt ’33, ’35, HON ’75)

Join President Sexton and the NYU Alumni Association at the beautiful Roosevelt Hotel on Friday, May 13, 6:30 – 9:30 PM, and help celebrate the accomplishments and dedication of this year’s slate of outstanding graduates.

President Emerita of the National Council of Negro Women Dorothy I. Height (Steinhardt ’33, ’35, HON ’75) will receive the Eugene J. Keogh Distinguished Public Service Award. One of America’s most influential civil rights leaders, Height received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994, and the Congressional Medal of Honor in March 2004.

This year’s Distinguished Alumni Awards will be presented to three respected graduates who have demonstrated extraordinary achievement in their profession. This year’s recipients are Abraham Lackman (WSC ’71), Marvin Leffler (STERN ’42, ’51), and Ray Suarez (WSC ’78). Lackman, president of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities, is considered one of the top experts on fiscal issues in New York State. Leffler, president of the Town Hall Foundation and an NYU Trustee, spearheaded the restoration of Town Hall to its place as a renowned venue that showcases important dance, music, and literary performances. As senior correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, Suarez’s intelligent news analysis and groundbreaking programs have earned him numerous awards and brought insightful coverage of local, national, and international events to millions in the United States and abroad.

In addition, Alumni Meritorious Service Awards will be presented to Melvin Stein (STERN ’53), president of Stein, Stein & Feit, P.C. and a member of the NYU Alumni Association and Stern School Advisory Council, and Stanley Turetzky (DEN ’62), clinical assistant professor of Diagnostic Science and Urgent Care at NYU College of Dentistry. These awards commemorate years of dedicated service to NYU, its current students, and its alumni associations.
