Tisch School of the Arts

NYU sponsors International
Student Film Festival

More than 90 student films representing 38 film schools in 26 countries were screened during the fifth annual New York University International Student Film Festival in October. The showcase, hosted by the Tisch School of the Arts, also featured a special screening of alumnus Martin Scorsese’s (TSOA ’64) new film “Il Mio Viaggio in Italia,” a documentary on the history of Italian cinema from its origins through the 1970s. Mr. Scorsese joined the festival for a question-and-answer session following the screening.

“NYU’s International Film Festival went on as planned because we believe it is important to provide our students with the opportunity to develop a dialogue with students from around the world,” said Mary Schmidt Campbell, dean of the Tisch School. “The spirit of international understanding, discourse, and cooperation that the showcase helped foster served as a fitting tribute to the victims of the September 11 attack.”

The winners were announced during a ceremony in the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Film Center. The top three were: First Prize Winner: “A Man Thing” by Slawomir Fabicki, Polish National Film School; Second Prize Winner: “Mother” by Jyri Kahonen, University of Art and Design, Helsinki, Finland; and Third Prize Winner: “Zen and the Art of Landscaping” by David Kartch, Columbia University.

During the International Student Film Festival famed director and NYU alumnus Martin Scorsese screened his new documentary history of Italian cinema. Scorsese, above center, was joined at the screening by Wanda McDaniel Ruddy, left, executive vice president of entertainment communications for Giorgio Armani Worldwide (and mother of John Ruddy, a freshman at TSOA), and TSOA Dean Mary Schmidt Campbell.

Tisch School of the Arts Sponsors NY Talent Market

Tisch held a New York Talent Market on October 11th for metro area alumni and students in search of agents and representation. Hundreds of students and alumni packed into the Tisch building with headshots, resumes, and samples of their work in hand, hoping to spark some interest in their creative efforts. The event was followed by a similar talent market held in Los Angeles. The next TSOA job and intern fair is scheduled for April 8, 2002 from 12-3 pm at Todman Soundstage, 35 W. 4th St., New York City.

On January 20th, Dean Campbell hosted a reception for all Tisch alumni, students and friends at Robert Redford’s restaurant, Zoom, in Park City for those attending the Festival. At the Awards Night on January 27, alumnus Dean Kapsalis (TSOA ’92) was awarded Honorable Mention for his short film, “Jigsaw Venus,” an unexpected and sweet love story.
