The Future of Cities. The Future of Us was the theme of this years Graduate School of Arts and Science Deans Day, which was held on Saturday, March 23rd.
After registration and a continental breakfast in Bobst Library, there were two concurrent morning activities: tours of the new languages and literature building and a career workshop entitled Strategies to Navigate Todays Shifting Economy. During the deans luncheon, Dean Catharine R. Stimpson presented the GSAS Alumni Achievement Award to Ruth J. Abram (GSAS 84), founder and president of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.
The afternoon featured a town meeting style forum on the future of cities. Scheduled panelists included Ruth Abram, professor Thomas Bender, professor Manthia Diawara, School of Law professor Noah Feldman, professor Harvey Molotch, Kevin Murphy (GSAS 01), Andrew M. Mellon Post-doctoral Fellow at the Center for the Humanities at Wesleyan University, and Jane Rothstein, a doctoral candidate in a joint program in NYUs department of History and Skirball department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies. The panelists examined how recent events have altered our view of cities and their role in our lives, and explored new challenges and the need to maintain the freedom and vitality of our urban centers.
