I could not begin my first year as president without greeting our 350,000 alumni across the nation and around the world. You are, each one of you, a member of an important branch of the NYU family. Whichever undergraduate, graduate, or professional school you attended, you bring the NYU experience to your work and your personal commitments as you move through life. Alumni are the Universitys ambassadors to innumerable professions and spheres of endeavor. For this reason alone, it is important that I communicate to you the essence of my vision for NYU.
In the coming years, with the advice and counsel of my esteemed colleagues, I hope to build on our existing strengths. I envision NYU as a leader in research and teaching in the arts and sciences; an innovator in professional education; a model for interdisciplinary study and collaboration between schools; and, above all, a diverse community of scholars who share a sense of civic responsibility.
If the challenges of the past year have taught us anything, they have taught us that we are, indeed, a community. Every day, I see ways in which this University expresses the energy and heart of the city that is its home. Because I was a dean for fourteen years, I know this institution well its history, it unique urban character, and its incredible spirit. You, the alumni, are carrying that spirit far beyond the borders of our campus. I hope that as you read these pages, you will be inspired to become more deeply involved with your alma mater. There is always a need for another voice, another perspective, another helping hand to build our NYU community.
