COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE

Last October, the College of Arts and Science welcomed alumni speakers for the college's annual Dean's Day, among them Murray Hidary, CAS '93, Benjamin Wu, CAS '85, David Levy, ENG '67, Maria Bartiromo, CAS '89, Allen Jacobson, ARTS '62, Karl Kilb, CAS '86, and Lana Skirboll, ARTS '70. The college also welcomed the NYU Heights Class of 1949 back to campus for its 50th. Dean Matthew Santirocco congratulated the alumni and thanked them for their generous class gifts. Heights alumni shared memories and enjoyed a dinner and dance in the John Ben Snow Room. Professors Frederick Ulfers and York Rhodes discussed the history of the Heights as well as the past and future of engineering projects. Other faculty speakers included Jess Benhabib, William E. Burrows, Una Chaudhuri, Lynn Gumpert, Peter Lennie, and Kenneth Perlin. Pictured above are alumni from the Heights Colleges of arts and engineering.



Graduate School of Arts and Science

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) Dean's Day, held in March, featured an address by the renowned critic and NYU Professor Harold Bloom and panel discussions moderated by GSAS faculty and alumni. This year's Alumni Achievement Award was presented to Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and MacArthur Foundation Fellow George Perle, Ph.D. '56, who dedicated the honor to the memory of Martin Bernstein, Curt Sachs and Gustave Reese, three of his teachers at GSAS. Perle, whose compositions have figured on the programs of many of the world's major orchestras, is professor emeritus of the City University of New York. He is the author of seven books, including The Operas of Alban Berg. He celebrated his 85th birthday on May 6.

Wagner School of Public Service

In April, NYU's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and the Wagner Alumni Association hosted its annual gala, during which the Torch Awards and Troy R. Westmeyer Distinguished Alumni Awards were presented to four outstanding alumni. Brendan Sexton, president of the Times Square Business Improvement District, delivered the keynote address.

Westmeyer Awards were given to former State Senator and U.S. Congressman Matthew Rinaldo, '79, and Wagner adjunct associate professor George A. Sarkar, '75, former CEO of Manhattan's Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital.

Torch Awards, presented by the Wagner Alumni Association, were given to Carol Thompson Cole, '75, president of the Curtex Group, and Christine Chambers Gilfillan, '96, president of the MCJ Foundation, her family's foundation dedicated to providing grants to youth-oriented programs in the New York-New Jersey area.





School of Medicine

The NYU School of Medicine held its Medical Alumni Day in April. Dr. Harry Blum, '21, was the oldest alumnus present. Mitchell H. Charap, '77, chairman, Medical Alumni Day Committee, and his committee planned an informative day that included a continuing medical education program organized by Dr. Robert J. Soberman, '46, associate dean of NYU Post-Graduate School of Medicine. The program included presentations by Dr. Martin J. Blaser, '73, Frederick H. King Professor of Internal Medicine and chairman, Dept. of Medicine, NYU School of Medicine, and director of Medical Services at Tisch and Bellevue Hospitals, and Dr. Daniel F. Roses, '69, Jules Leonard Whitehill Professor of Surgery and director, Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center, and co-director, Division of Surgical Oncology, NYU School of Medicine.


















Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development

At a Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development Policy Breakfast in April, then-Interim Schools Chancellor Harold O. Levy spoke to an overflow crowd of educators, faculty, policy leaders, and corporate and foundation officials about plans and priorities for the New York City Public Schools.

More than 650 alumni participated in the School of Law Reunion Weekend 2000 in May. U.S. Congresswoman Diana DeGette, '82, of Colorado, and former U.S. Congressman Frank J. Guarini, Jr., '50, LL.M. '55, of New Jersey, were speakers on a panel entitled "Campaign Financing: Is the Government up for Sale?", which was moderated by Burt Neuborne, John Norton Pomeroy Professor of Law and legal director of the school's Brennan Center for Justice. Vice Dean and Professor Stephen Gillers led a sesson on "Some Legal Ethics Issues in the Investigation of President Clinton." Alumni reunion committees held separate dinners and receptions for 12 graduating classes, Root-Tilden-Kern alumni, and M.C.J., LL.M., and international graduates, and an all-reunion dance at the Waldorf-Astoria. A family and friends barbecue capped the weekend.



Monopoly Night at SCPS

A record 700 alumni and real estate professionals competed around the Monopoly board at the 7th annual Evening of Monopoly Tournament, hosted last October by alumni from the School of Continuing and Professional Studies Master of Science in Real Estate program. Donald Trump served as honorary chairman of the event, which is produced by a dedicated alumni committee, headed by Seth Schumer `90. Funds raised go toward student scholarships.

Last October the Leonard N. Stern School of Business launched its centennial celebration kickoff with a gala evening, held at the United Nations, honoring the school's Board of Overseers, alumni, students, faculty, and friends.
