REGIONAL EVENTS

With over 350,000 alumni around the world, New York University has developed a number of ongoing opportunities for those living beyond the New York metropolitan area to come together as a community of learners. During the 1999-2000 academic year, nearly 30 regional alumni events were held, attracting graduates and friends of the University from all over the country.

FLORIDA



Miami - On December 9, Miami-area alumni hosted a cocktail reception entitled "Cool Jazz on a Hot Night: A Pre-Millennium Celebration" at Loew's Miami Beach Hotel. Boca Raton - On December 12 Ann Marcus, dean of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, greeted over 200 area alumni at the Boca Raton Marriott. Neil Postman, the Paulette Goddard Professor of Media Ecology and chair of the Department of Culture and Communication, gave the keynote address entitled "Building a Bridge to the Eighteenth Century." Alan Shapiro, director of gift planning, spoke on "Current Issues in Tax Planning and Charitable Giving." Above: Postman joins Lester I. Brookner, ED '48, '66, and his wife Elaine.













St. Petersberg - Guests attending the January 16 luncheon at the Don CeSar Beach Resort and Spa in St. Petersburg heard art historian Professor A. Palm Beach - On February 27, NYU President L. Jay Oliva hosted an alumni reception at the Ritz-Carlton in Palm Beach and gave a presentation celebrating New York University in the new millennium. On Feb. 28, Dr. Oliva, who holds the Fribourg Chair in European Studies, was the first lecturer in a three-day mini-course entitled "Russia: Invasions, Rebellions, and Empire," at the Norton Museum. Professor Yanni Kotsonis continued the course, which was part of NYU-SCPS's Winter Term in the Palm Beaches. The program included mini-courses by SCPS Associate Dean William Cipolla and adjunct associate professor Alon Ben-Meir. Delray Beach - On December 11 a College of Dentistry reception, hosted by Dean Michael C. Alfano at the Marriott Hotel in Delray Beach, drew 100 graduates of the college. Pictured l to r: Dr. Lawrence Kawa, '93, Dr. Gerardo Santiago, '91, and Dean Alfano.

On April 30, Wagner School professor Mitchell L. Moss, Henry Hart Rice Professor of Urban Policy and Planning and director of the Taub Urban Research Center, Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, delivered the keynote address at a brunch reception organized by NYU alumni in The Charles Hotel at Harvard Square. Moss, who directs a National Science Foundation project on the role of information technology in the future of urban regions, spoke on "How Telecommunications are Shaping the Cities of the Future."

NYU President, L. Jay Oliva hosted a cocktail reception for student leaders, alumni, parents and friends of NYU in the nation's capital on April 4. Host Committee members organized the event at the Washington Court Hotel.

Red Burns, one of the new media's most influential pioneers, was the guest faculty speaker at the NYU Alumni in Arizona cocktail reception on March 29 in Scottsdale. Burns, senior research scientist and Tokyo Broadcasting System Chair, Interactive Telecommunications Program at Tisch School of the Arts, spoke on "Creativity and Technology." Ann Marcus, dean of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, hosted the event.









SILICON VALLEY

On November 4 Peter Lennie, dean for science at the Faculty of Arts and Science, and Ken Perlin, director of the Center for Advanced Technology, hosted the first NYU alumni reception in California's Silicon Valley.
