Join New York University's Africa House for events that look at political, economic, social and cultural aspects of Africa and its relationship with the world.
The following events are free and open to the public. People who are not members of the NYU community are encouraged to attend, but are reminded that some form of photo ID will be required to gain entrance to most NYU buildings. This short documentary directed by Alain Resnais and Chris Marker, traces the impact of French colonialism on African art. The screening is followed by a panel discussion in English. Panelists included, LudovicCortade- Assistant Professor of French- New York University, Awam Ampka- Associate Professor of Drama- Director, Africana Studies, New York University, Denis Hollier- Professor of French- New York University, Alisa LaGamma- Curator, Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Susan Vogel- Professor of African Art and Architecture- Columbia University, Founding Director, Museum for African Art, and Filmmaker.

Dr. Donald Kaberuka, who is the current President of the African Development Bank Group spoke about Africa as the changing face: The face of the future, followed by a question and answer session and then a wine and cheese reception. Dr. Kaberuka served as Rwanda's Minister of Finance and Economic Planning from 1997 to 2005. He had 12 years experience in the Banking industry, trade finance, international commodity business and Development issues, before he joined the government. As Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, the President was Governor for Rwanda at the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the African Development Bank.

This event organized I collaboration with Miracle Corners of the World (MCW) and the Africa Travel Association (ATA) was devoted to learning about investment and tourism opportunities in Sierra Leone. His Excellency the Vice President was accompanied by Honorable L. B. A. Koroma, Minister of State. There was also a panel discussion, followed by a Q&A session moderated by CNN's Senior Business Correspondent, Ali Velshi.

Panelists included: Dr. Kevin Davis (NYU School of Law): A professor at the NYU School of Law, as well as an expert in Financing Development and Contract Theory. Dr. Davis's current research is focused on commercial law and the general relationship between law and economic development. Dr. Augustin Fosu (UNU-WIDER): e] Deputy Director, UNU-WIDER honorary RDRC Research Fellow (University of California-Berkeley) and expert in African Development and the impact of globalization on the world's poor. Dr. Akbar Noman (Columbia University): Senior Fellow, Initiative for Policy Dialogue and Adjunct Professor at Columbia University. Dr. Noman has worked at the World Bank on various assignments which included macroeconomic management, country strategies, trade policy, financial and private sector development, among other topics. Dr. Michael Wilson (Noguchi Memorial Institute): Deputy Director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute of Medical Research at the University of Ghana and world renowned parasitologist with research concentrating on parasitic and vector borne diseases as well as other infectious diseases of importance in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Council for Zimbabwe, in conjunction with Africa House will host an international symposium themed "Zimbabwe at 28: Creating the Future." The purpose of the symposium is to examine Zimbabwe's current political crisis, and reflect on priorities, directions, and opportunities for jump-starting the socio-economic revival of Zimbabwe. Focus will be on developing and implementing an action plan to address needs on the ground and generate international media attention to the need for socio-economic revival in Zimbabwe.

A discussion of Venture Partners' work, both from the view of typical challenges faced by venture capitalists as well as the particular circumstances of conducting this business in Botswana. The discussion will also touch on the state and maturity of the venture capital industry in Botswana; types of investments undertaken; how venture capital firms in Botswana go about forecasting future cash flows for projects; and an examination of Botswana's strong political and economic traditions and what has allowed these traditions to flourish.
Talking With Pictures Exhibition
May 26 - June 15th 2008
Africa House presented this exhibition in conjunction with BAM and the Museum for Contemporary African Diaspora Arts. Talking with pictures empowers youth with the means to represent themselves and their communities while participating in a visual exchange with young people in another country. It connects teenagers in public schools in Accra, Ghana, and New York City so that they can share their stories and responses to global challenges.
