African Transport Corridors and Waterways
Location: NYU Economics Department, 19 West 4th Street Room 736

Dorothy Muroki, Project Director, ROADS, will be discussing the African transport sector, the ROADS Project, and their unique public-private partnership. The Roads to a Healthy Future (ROADS) Project, managed by FHI 360 with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is the US Government's regional platform to address HIV and broader health challenges along transport corridors, including key ports, in East, Central and Southern Africa. ROADS works closely with national governments, local implementing partners and the private sector to develop sustainable prevention and mitigation programming targeted to the needs of mobile populations and the vulnerable community members with whom they interact. In a unique public-private partnership, FHI 360, USAID and Dubai Ports (DP) World have come together to establish SafeTStop Community Centers to provide health and other services to port workers, their families, truck drivers and others in host communities.
This event will be followed by a wine and cheese reception.

The Sixth Annual Presidential Forum on Tourism

Hosted by New York University's Africa House and moderated by Ali Velshi, CNN Senior Correspondent, this one-day event offered Africa's leaders an important opportunity to speak about how travel and tourism contributes to a country's economy and development. Ten African leaders (from the AUC, Benin, Burundi, Ghana, The Gambia, Liberia, Malawi, Morocco, Tanzania, and the World Bank) addressed the 2011 forum. The featured theme for this year was, "The Role of Entrepreneurship in Africa's Tourism Industry."

A Lecture and Luncheon with Mellena Haile of the Kauffman Foundation

Mellena Haile from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation gave a presentation on some of the Foundation's current projects. Mellena's responsibilities include advancing the Foundation's entrepreneurial initiatives and strategy focusing on Africa and strengthening the development of the Expeditionary Economics field of research. Her presentation included the following:
Summary of findings from the Kauffman Foundation's Roundtable meeting in London on entrepreneurship in Africa. Attendees of the roundtable included on-the-ground entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and foundations.
An overview of E-Pulse, a research program that tracks the evolution of entrepreneurial ecosystems.
Discussion about the development of Kauffman's global founders network, which focuses on the Foundation's next steps to developing entrepreneurial ecosystems around the world.
Followed by a Q&A session.

The Role of the Judiciary in Protecting Human Rights and Advancing Access to Justice in Ghana, Featuring the current Chief Justice of Ghana

Her Ladyship Chief Justice Mrs. Georgina Theodora Wood has had a distinguished career on the Bench spanning over 35 years. She is the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, having been appointed in 2007, the first woman in Ghana to be elevated to this high office, and a leader of reforms to mainstream alternative dispute resolution in Ghanaian courts and promote access to justice and the rule of law. Chief Justice Wood served for three years as a Public Prosecutor before joining the Bench as a District Court Magistrate in 1973, and rose through the hierarchy of the court system culminating in her appointment to the highest judicial office in Ghana.

Zimbabwe's Economy: Hyperinflation's Lessons, Opportunities, and Challenges

Hon. Tendai Biti is the Minister of Finance for the Government of National Unity in Zimbabwe, a position he has occupied since February 2009. He is a founding member of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), assuming the post of Secretary-General in 2006.Minister Biti is a leading proponent of democratic and financial reforms in the country and is currently tasked with resuscitating Zimbabwe's economy. Under his leadership, the use of the Zimbabwean dollar as an official currency was effectively abandoned on April 12, 2009. Also, with a background as a distinguished labor and human rights lawyer, he rose to prominence after handling high profile cases for the labor movement in the 1990s.
This informal event will be moderated by Africa House followed by a Q&A session and a wine and cheese reception.

This will be a roundtable discussion on the political economy and democracy in Ghana in collaboration with the Center for Democratic Development (CDD) of Ghana. Professor Gyimah Boadi, the head of CDD will be a part of the panel. CDD Ghana is one of the premier institutes/Think Tanks in Africa in the general area of democracy, governance and political economy. This event will be preceded by a small reception for the Dei Center featuring Seth and Carleene Dei of the Dei Foundation.
