NYU in Ghana

In Fall 2004, NYU in Ghana began its first semester as NYU's newest study abroad program. With two buildings in Accra, extensive staff and faculty and multiple links to Ghanaian institutions, the program is a remarkable presence for a Western university in Africa. Its primary purpose is to allow students from NYU and other U.S. universities to spend a semester in Africa and have continuous contact with local universities, students and Ghanaian life, while enjoying the amenities and educational support of an American university. In addition, it provides a base in Africa for numerous faculty projects, from documentary film-making to arts exchanges to social science research.

The program runs two dormitories with room for over 50 students, as well as a complete academic center where they can take classes with NYU faculty. In addition, NYU in Ghana takes advantage of existing resources and facilities at two prominent higher educational institutions in West Africa: University of Ghana, Legon and Ashesi University. The country's flagship institution, the University of Ghana, Legon, is run on the British Oxbridge model, and is arguably the leading academic institution in the region. The University is home to some of West Africa's foremost African Studies scholars and its resources are unparalleled in that part of the world. Ashesi University is a small private institution modeled after Swarthmore with principal strengths in business and computer science. It has a dynamic and young administration and faculty and an excellent reputation for innovation and quality education.
