Talking

Talking With Pictures joins young people in these two international cities to each other through digital photography. Students were asked to learn the fundamentals of photography, shoot subjects that interested them, and then analyze and interpret their peers’ photos to ensure an exchange of content between the two groups. Each student received a book containing photos of their city, but this Web site is the meeting ground of the two groups, where the participants can view the similarities and differences between each place. For three months in 2006, New York University students in New York worked with Norman Thomas High School and students in Accra worked with the Yohoshua Primary/Junior Secondary School. The students taught digital photography workshops and skills ranging from printing to Photoshop. The images you see on this Web site are a representative sampling of the photographs taken during these months. Costs for the cameras and other supplies were financed through the generous support of Africa House and the Tisch Department of Photography and Imaging’s Community Collaborations class. The photography teachers and program administrators were: Caitlin Chandler, Maria Cobb, Molly King and David Reilly. The Web site was created and maintained by Maria Cobb. A special thank you to those who gave their time and guidance, including: Bami Adedoyin, Awam Amkpa, Petrushka Bazin, Caitlin Berrigan, Gloria Cahill, Dean Mary Schmidt Campbell, Kenneth Nkrumah Daniels, Erika deVries, Editha Mesina, Lorie Novak, Yaw Nyarko, Karl Peterson, Fred Ritchin, Christian Sutter, Geoffrey Williams and Deborah Willis.
