Reputation

It’s likely that you’ve heard of NYU by word of mouth because it’s a popular place, its anchor campus is in the highly desirable location of New York City, and our NYU Abu Dhabi campus is getting a lot of attention.

Maybe someone you know has gone here. And hopefully, NYU and our new portal campus in Abu Dhabi were also mentioned in a conversation with your college counselor!

NYU has earned its reputation for academic excellence through faculty recruitment, research, global educational initiatives, and, most important, fantastic undergraduate liberal arts programs that prepare graduates for great success in the professional arena. NYU is not an Ivy League institution and can never be an Ivy. Why? Because the Ivy League is a historical construct that is just that—historical and unalterable. That doesn’t mean that NYU isn’t one of the leading research universities in the country. As our University president likes to say, “NYU is THE New York university,” comparable to none. We like to believe—and we hope you will, too—that NYU is in a league of its own.

The Reputation of NYU’s Faculty

New York University is a Category I research university, is classed as private (versus public), and is one of only 62 institutions admitted to membership in the Association of American Universities. Its reputation is substantiated by the research being done by members of our community, the awards they have won, and the desire of outstanding scholars to join our faculty. Bragging rights? You bet.

  • Guggenheims and Nobels
Over the last four years, 17 NYU faculty members have won Guggenheim Fellowships. In 2005, NYU alumnus Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, won the Nobel Peace Prize. Leonard N. Stern School of Business professor Robert Engle was a 2003 Nobel Laureate in economics, and, to date, five NYU physicians have been awarded Nobel Prizes in physiology or medicine.
  • Arts Awards
Each year, NYU’s arts and performance community is well represented among nominees and winners at the Golden Globe and Academy Awards ceremonies. In 2009, NYU set a record at the Sundance Film Festival— 170 university faculty, alumni, and students were involved with a record-tying 57 NYU films entered into the festival; eight of these films were award winners. (Find out about more awards here, if you’re interested.)
  • Commitment to Faculty Expansion
NYU recently committed to a dramatic expansion of the Faculty of Arts and Science, which serves both the College of Arts and Science and the Graduate School of Arts and Science. Other NYU schools, colleges, and programs have also hired new faculty.
  • Researching Current, Innovative Issues
In recent years, many of our faculty have turned their attention toward the new and enduring issues of our world, like those working as part of the Center for Catastrophe Preparedness and Response who are exploring how cities respond to catastrophic events, those in the economics department who are examining the most effective use of foreign aid in developing nations, and those at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences who are working to better model our global climate. These are just a few of the important initiatives that show our faculty’s concern for and courage in addressing issues that currently press on the minds of many.
