Activities

At NYU, it's not all about New York City, at least not all of the time.

Campus activities become very important as you decide which colleges really suit who you are and what you like to do with your time. Finding a college that offers the clubs, teams, and activities you enjoy outside of class guarantees that you’ll find other students who share your interests—and those people will most likely become your friends for life. Some campuses offer tons of activities—lots of clubs, social events, and outings that make use of the school’s location.

NYU offers an incredibly active and diverse experience for undergraduates right here on our campus. At NYU you can become a leader or you could be a joiner—or both! Your experience here takes on the shape of the life you want. NYU offers so many activities that getting involved on campus is a challenge for one reason: there are too many choices!

  • Nearly 400 clubs and organizations, 18 fraternities and 10 sororities.
  • Two gyms—the Jerome S. Coles Sports and Recreation Center and the Palladium Athletic Facility—provide the setting for more than 275 intramural sports teams, recreation classes (e.g., aerobics, tennis, yoga) and 21 UAA varsity teams that compete with seven other private, urban universities.
  • Community service opportunities that connect students with the community, the country, the world. NYU’s official tagline actually reads "A private university in the public service." Here are some examples of community service opportunities.

Over 12,500 Undergraduates Live on Campus

While NYU has 21 residence halls, most freshman residents live together in the traditional residence halls that surround Washington Square Park, and most sophomores live in the Union Square residence halls. Upperclassmen live in halls that fan out from Washington Square to the East Village, the Gramercy Park area, and lower Manhattan. And, just so you know, all freshmen who request housing on their admission application and meet all deadlines are guaranteed housing until they graduate. Many students, especially juniors and seniors, choose to live off campus in apartments.

NYU places… and more

Resources and facilities at NYU are pretty impressive. The university is constantly improving its research facilities, resources for student services, lecture halls and laboratories, faculty offices, and library and study spaces.

  • Bobst Library. One of eight libraries on campus, Bobst houses nearly 3.7 million volumes and is one of the largest open-stack libraries anywhere.
  • Computer Services. Information Technology Services (ITS) provides computer networking resources, including NYU Internet accounts and personal Web pages.
  • NYU’s Student Center. The Helen and Martin Kimmel Center for University Life houses the Skirball Center for Performing Arts, student dining facilities, students lounges, and the Student Resource Center.
  • Two Athletic Centers. At The Jerome S. Coles Sports and Recreation Center and the Palladium Athletic Facility, you'll find over 160 recreational courses starting every six weeks.
  • 21 Residence Halls. 12,500 students live on campus in one of NYU's residence halls.
  • NYU Dining Services.  A variety of meal plans accommodate busy student schedules. On-campus dining options include nearly everything, from Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks to traditional dining halls and larger food courts.
