A Global Network

NYU offers more than just study abroad.  Our students enter a Global Network University. What does that mean?

Academically, it means you’ll have the opportunity to build global experiences into your curriculum. In fact, some majors require international experience as part and parcel of the NYU experience, such as the Liberal Studies and the Business and Political Economy (though the Stern School of Business) programs.

Physically, it means that NYU is composed of three portal campuses—New York, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai—through which undergraduates can enter and complete their NYU undergraduate degree.

Geographically, it means that NYU has global academic centers on six continents that provide opportunities for amazing study abroad experiences—for a semester or academic year, a summer, or a short-term research project or intersession program.

Intellectually, all of this means that NYU is committed to educating global citizens.

A Few Global Facts About NYU

  • NYU Abu Dhabi, which opened to its first class in fall 2010, provides a visionary undergraduate liberal arts, science, and engineering experience.
  • NYU sends more students abroad than any other institution in the U.S: The Institute of International Education’s annual Open Doors Report has NYU ranked number one for the past five years.
  • Last year alone, more than 2,500 students—from NYU as well as other colleges and universities—took advantage of the opportunities at NYU’s academic centers in Argentina, China, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Ghana, Israel, Italy, and Spain.
  • Over 40 percent of all undergraduates take advantage of NYU’s semester-long study abroad programs. NYU aims to send at least 50 percent of all undergraduates to study within its Global Network University for at least one semester during their years here.
  • Each of the semester-long or full academic year programs at our destinations abroad is designed to fit smoothly into individual academic programs.
  • Specialized courses taught by NYU faculty are constantly being added to the offerings at our sites abroad. For example, music students can take composition workshops and musical instruction courses at NYU Prague, and journalism students can stay on track with reporting courses at NYU Buenos Aires.
  • Courses abroad, most of which are held on site at NYU’s own academic centers, are adapted from equivalent NYU courses offered on our portal campus in New York City.
  • Although the majority of the courses are taught in English, there are offerings in other languages as well.
  • Programs are structured to provide an experience of a lifetime and include guaranteed housing, field trips and excursions, and on-site staff for general support.
  • While away from the portal campuses, financial aid and billing is handled just like any other semester.

"The real advantage of business students being able to travel abroad is that they have the opportunity to explore the culture, meet with company executives, and see corporate operations."
