Transfer Applicants

You should apply as a transfer student if you are currently or have been enrolled as an associate's degree or bachelor's degree candidate (part-time or full-time) in another college or university anywhere in the world. You should not, however, apply as a transfer student if you are currently or have been seeking an associate's degree while you are/were con-currently enrolled as a high school student. Credits/points obtained through a certificate program or a vocational training program will not likely transfer to NYU. As a result, though you may apply to NYU as a transfer candidate from such a program, you must complete at least 30 credits/points of liberal arts coursework (roughly the equivalent of 1 year of full-time study) by the time you would enroll at NYU, to be competitive for transfer admission.

You should apply as a first-year freshman applicant if you have simply taken college or university courses as a non-degree student or if you are taking college or university courses during high school.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions serves full-time, degree-seeking candidates for admission. If you are a returning adult student, looking to complete your degree part-time, or simply looking to take courses at NYU on a non-degree basis, you should contact NYU's School of Continuing & Professional Studies.  If you are looking to attend NYU as a visiting student or for post-graduate studies, see our Special Admission page.

Requirements for Transfer Admission - A Checklist

  • Common Application & NYU Supplement: Complete the Transfer Application and the NYU Supplement, both accessible through the Common Application website. Before you can submit your application online, you will need to pay a $70.00 application fee or request a fee waiver. The Common Application is NYU's exclusive application. It is the only way to apply for admission to NYU. The Common Application and NYU Supplement will prompt you to write about your experiences and to write a personal statement, as well as three short essays.
  • Instructor Evaluation: Complete your portion of the Instructor's Evaluation form (available on the Common Application website) and give it to a professor or instructor who has taught you at the college/university level, along with a stamped, addressed envelope for his/her convenience. While we prefer that the Instructor's Evaluation Form is included with your letter of recommendation - to expedite the processing of your application - the form itself is not required and your recommender can submit a letter on your behalf without it
  • College Official's Report and College Transcripts: Request that your advisor or school official submit the College Official's Report and that your registrar or school official submit a copy of your college transcript to the NYU Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 665 Broadway, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10012, USA.
  • School Report and High School Transcript: Request that a counselor or school official at your high school complete this form and send it along with your high school transcript to the NYU Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the same address. Your high school transcript (or General Education Diploma) is required regardless of when you graduated.
  • Standardized Tests: Please consult the Standardized Testing page of our website to learn about our testing requirements. After you have consulted our requirements, request that your SAT, SAT I, SAT II, SAT Subject Tests, ACT scores, AP scores, and/or TOEFL scores (if applicable) be sent from the appropriate testing agencies to NYU. Be sure you use the NYU code in sending your scores to us. The NYU code is 2562 for SAT, AP, and TOEFL scores. The code for ACT scores is 2838.
  • Additional Requirements: Some NYU programs have additional requirements such as an audition or portfolio. See the Special Program Requirements page for exact requirements and deadlines.

Before sending any of your related application materials by mail, make photocopies of each document for your records. All forms and credentials (School Report, transcripts, etc.) should be mailed to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 665 Broadway, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10012 USA. We wish you the best in completing your application!
