International Students

NYU welcomes applications for admission from international applicants all over the world. We have one of the largest international student bodies in the world. In fact, international students comprise roughly 13% of our most recent entering class. Please keep in mind the following:

  • We are, unfortunately, not able to provide any scholarships or grants for international students. International students admitted to NYU will be expected to pay the entire cost of their education with their own resources.  As a result, requests for application fee waivers will not be approved for international students;
  • Because of the delays in receiving documents from outside the United States, all students who reside outside the U.S. are strongly encouraged to apply online; and
  • Before beginning your application, please be aware that NYU does not consider undergraduate admissions applications from students who already possess a bachelor's degree in any academic area.

Requirements for International Applicants

The application requirements for all our applicants - including those who are international - are the same. All freshmen applicants - including international students - must submit some form of standardized testing to be considered for admission to NYU. Students are required to submit official score reports directly from the appropriate testing agency. Please consult the appropriate pages of our website to learn about the required testing requirements for freshman applicants or testing requirements for transfer applicants. These pages apply to both domestic and international students and there are no exceptions whatsoever.

To locate an international testing center and date for the SAT or AP exams, visit the College Board SAT website. To locate an international testing center and date for the ACT, visit the ACT website. To locate an international testing center and date for the AP, visit the College Board AP website

Instructions for Submitting International Documents

All documents submitted for review must be official; that is, they must be either originals or copies certified by authorized persons. A "certified" copy is one that bears either an original signature of the registrar or other designated school official or an original impression of the institution's seal. Uncertified copies are not acceptable. If these official documents are in a foreign language, they must be accompanied by an official English translation from an accredited translation agency.

NYU cannot assume responsibility for the return of any documents you provide in support of your application for admission. You should not submit diplomas or original single copies of records that cannot be replaced.

Also, please be certain to use your legal name exactly as it appears on your passport on all NYU applications and related documents and correspondence.

Certification of Finances

It is not necessary for you to submit financial documents with your application. The New York University Application for Certificate of Eligibility (AFCOE), will be available online to students who are offered admission and who pay the enrollment deposit. All non-U.S. Citizens and non-U.S. permanent residents must file the AFCOE and submit appropriate evidence of their ability to finance their education before certificates for student visas (Form I-20) or exchange visitor visas (Form DS-2019) can be issued.

If you are admitted to NYU and your studies will be financed with your own savings, parental support, outside private or government scholarships, or any combination of these, you will need to send official letters or similar certificates as proof of such support. You will need to include your name and date of birth on each document you submit.

If you are currently in the United States at the time of your admission, you must submit a copy of your I-94 card. Please note that students holding F-1 or J-1 student visas are generally not allowed to work in the United States to earn money toward their education and are required to pursue a full-time course load each semester.
