New York University welcomes applications from homeschooled students. All homeschooled applicants must submit a complete application for admission, the personal statements/essay, the undergraduate statistical form, and the application fee. Note also that auditions or portfolios are required for applicants to some programs. Other admissions requirements for homeschooled students have been modified to take into consideration the variety of settings in which homeschooling can occur, and are listed below.
Transcripts
A transcript indicating the coursework you have completed and that which is in progress is required. The transcript should indicate grades that have been received for each course. Detailed performance evaluations are helpful, but not required. While courses do not have to be named in traditional terms, a brief summary of course content is required. Other materials, such as course bibliographies or syllabi, may be submitted, but are not required. If homeschooling has been supplemented by formal coursework either at the secondary school or post-secondary level, official transcripts from the school(s) or college(s) are required.
Standardized Tests
Homeschooled applicants must meet our standardized test requirements.
Recommendations
Homeschooled applicants must provide at least two recommendations, including one from the person(s) who has served as the primary instructor or who has primary responsibility for assessing the applicant's academic performance. A second recommendation should be from an individual who is able to provide information concerning the applicant's readiness to begin studies at NYU, and should be from someone other than a parent.
High School/Equivalency Diploma
Homeschooled applicants are not required to present an equivalency diploma to be considered for admission. NYU, however, requires all admitted students to present proof of graduation. As a result, admitted homeschooled students must either be able to provide evidence of a homeschool diploma, a certificate of completion that is considered the equivalent of a high school diploma in the applicant's home state, or they must complete and submit results of their GED test prior to enrollment at NYU.
