New York University recognizes that special circumstances may affect a student's eligibility for federal and institutional financial aid which may not be reflected on the financial aid application. The Professional Judgment Request is designed to document such information for review by the Office of Financial Aid. At NYU, we have separate forms for Professional Judgment that help us to collect the correct documentation needed for our review depending on the circumstance.
The following categories differentiate which form you may need to request:
Death of a Parent or Spouse
Students requesting a Budget Appeal or a Dependency Override review should call the Office of Financial Aid at 212-998-4444 for more information.
Please call or visit the Office of Financial Aid during business hours to speak with a Financial Aid Counselor. The counselor will get a better understanding of your circumstance and will be able to assist you with all the options available to you. If a Professional Judgment Request is needed, they will give you access to the relevant form on your Albert Student Center To Do List.
When submitting a Professional Judgment Request, please be sure to complete all required sections of the form and submit all appropriate documentation as indicated. Incomplete request forms will not be reviewed until we receive all of the required documentation. Upon review, additional information may be requested at a later date.
After a Professional Judgment has been approved, your financial aid may be updated. This could mean an update in federal need-based aid or institutional aid depending on the circumstance, your grade level, and availability of funding. When you consult with the Financial Aid Counselor, they should be able to give you a sense of whether an approved Professional Judgment could affect your federal aid, institutional aid, or both.
There is no specific deadline to submit a request for Professional Judgment; however, depending on the timing, your request may not be applicable for the current academic year. If this is the case, you will be advised to submit for the next academic year once the new forms are available.
