Graduate Student Support

The education of graduate students is a central mission for NYU. Our graduate students go on to become the next generation of researchers and teaching faculty at leading institutions across the world. As part of their academic program (which is supported with financial aid packages including stipends, health insurance, tuition, and fees) many full-time graduate students have "assistantships" in which they perform teaching duties as part of their academic training to become future professors.

Highlights of NYU's package includes:

  • Full tuition and fees (equivalent to a $32,000 scholarship award);
  • An increase of $1,000 per year in the base stipend of doctoral GAs (currently $19,000 per year) for each of the next two years;
  • A promise that each year NYU will announce the new stipend for three years hence, thereby providing a planning horizon for our students;
  • A commitment to pay 100% of the student health insurance plan premiums for GAs;
  • A set of policies and practices providing guidance to GAs on a wide range of issues, including expectations for average weekly hours for assistantships, availability of compensation for obligatory training and meeting costs, reimbursement for authorized and necessary travel and meal expenses, and the like;
  • A $200,000 emergency assistance fund to support graduate students who may face medical emergencies for which they need additional resources.

Graduate Student Voice

As intergral members of the NYU community, graduate students have robust, permanent mechanisms through which they can express their concerns. The University is commmited to insuring that our graduate students play an appropriate role in developing policies that affect them.

The Student Senators Council (SSC) is currently assembling a working group of graduate students who would develop a rights and responsibilities social compact for all graduate students, as well as a set of GA/TA grievance policies and procedures.
