NYU Startups

Research with impact happens at NYU.

Products on the market include breakthrough drugs and medical devices, innovations in computing and networking, sustainable energy and biomaterials.

At research labs and classrooms across the Polytechnic Institute and Washington Square campuses and along NYU’s medical corridor on First Avenue, tough questions are being posed. Together, students, faculty and researchers are finding answers that can spawn commercial ventures and make the world better.

Today, NYU's science and technology researchers increasingly bear in mind the importance of commercializing discoveries, helped by the addition of the Polytechnic Institute, NYU's school of engineering, where the motto is "i2e"—invention, innovation and entrepreneurship. Today researchers are encouraged to move science to application, product and service, and from there to let their discoveries take flight as startup companies.

The results are extraordinary. Compared to other U.S. universities, NYU had 80% more new start-up companies created, per research dollar expended, than the national average. NYU faculty are leaders in their disciplines, doing research advancing a range of fields, from microbiology to machine learning, neural science to nanotechnology. In recognition of the quality of this research, NYU received over $300 million in government research grants in 2010. Grant funding is on the rise and the number of inventions is up, as are license agreements and technology transfer income.
