It's happening at NYU.
Entrepreneurship means seizing new opportunities. It means nurturing ideas that can address pressing global problems. Entrepreneurship allows researchers, technologists and scientists to understand their ideas' market value, helping them hone their questions. And launching ventures with impact is a perfect fit for a leading research university in the business capital of the world. Innovations born in NYU labs, classrooms and dorms have been transformed into products and services that save time, boost productivity, conserve energy and resources and save lives—all while creating jobs.
The University is committed to developing startups from student, faculty and researchers’ ideas across a broad spectrum of fields, spanning information technology, the physical sciences, engineering and medicine. At NYU, breadth is also marked by excellence: Academic centers at NYU are home to four Nobel and Crafoord Prize winners, three Abel Prize winners, 21 members of the National Academy of Sciences and seven Howard Hughes Medical Investigators, among many other honors. NYU has been awarded over 700 patents, two-thirds of which have been licensed to industry.
The conditions are ripe for entrepreneurship today, with an upswing underway: Faculty inventions have more than doubled in number each year for nearly a decade and licensing agreements have tripled, earning NYU $1.3 billion to further its research efforts. Numerous products have been commercialized, and more than 100 startups have been launched to bring NYU innovations to market. Yet the possibilities are far greater, given the breadth and depth of our research, the size of the university and of New York City. NYU innovators and entrepreneurs sit poised to strengthen NYC as a entrepreneurial hub, to bring valuable ideas to market with support from alumni, University leadership and New York's burgeoning entrepreneurial ecosystem of angel investors, venture capitalists and business incubators. Entrepreneurship matters and NYU is committed to making it happen.
