For NYU’s student developers, however, writing code is not always the most challenging part; it is getting access to the large amount of data that a successful app requires. NYU is working to make some data available to student developers to encourage innovation. New York-based STARC (the Student Technology and Research Committee, the IT working group of the NYU Student Senators Council now chaired by Jules O'Conner, along with Vice Chair Michael Hengerer) and NYU Abu Dhabi’s Research and Development Committee are two student groups working with the University on this endeavor. Some of the services that we support include NYU Classes; software licensing across campus; specialized printing; digitization; data services; lecture capture; live streaming; faculty teaching technology support. When it comes to life at NYU’s global academic centers and campuses, a simple IT upgrade can revolutionize everything from professors’ teaching styles and students’ learning abilities, to administrative staff’s workload. That is the case with the NYU academic center in Paris, France, which will be moving to a new building with new technical capacities in the city’s Latin Quarter in summer 2014. Community Feedback Drives Enhancements to NYU Classes One of the benefits of NYU Classes being built on Sakai, an open source platform, is the flexibility afforded in continually upgrading and enhancing the service. Since the University-wide launch of NYU Classes, the NYU Classes team has continued to develop the service, incorporating user feedback and deploying several enhancements over the course of the previous six months. Rather than hunt their prey, the predator will wait for the prey to come to it. Hackers are doing something very similar to gain access to systems that might otherwise be too well protected.
