The NYU Open Education Pilot Publishes Its First Courses

In early October 2010, NYU's first completely open courses were published on the Open Education Pilot website. This pilot launched with two exceptional courses. New York City: A Social History was taught by Faculty of Arts and Science Professor Daniel Walkowitz and focused on the social history of the city, tracing its development from a small 17th-century Dutch settlement into the multicultural metropolis it is today. American Literature I: From the Beginnings to the Civil War, taught by Faculty of Arts and Science Associate Professor and NYU Abu Dhabi Associate Dean of Humanities Cyrus Patell, is a survey of American literature and literary history, from the early colonial period to the eve of the Civil War.

The ATLAS Network Pilot: NYU's Sakai Open Academic Environment Initiative

In January 2011, NYU launched one of the first pre-release pilots of the revolutionary Sakai Open Academic Environment (OAE) for academic networking and collaboration in teaching, learning, and scholarship. The Summer Colloquium: Educational Technology Engages Students Across the Globe

To help connect the incoming freshmen before they set foot on campus, the students took part in an interactive summer reading colloquium, Cosmopolitan Ideas for Global Citizens. It took advantage of established educational technology — Blackboard, iTunes U, Second Life — and relied on the immense support of several ITS groups to create a unique summer program to match an exceptional freshman class.

The New Everyday: An Experiment in Middle-State Publishing

A website and an experiment in "middle-state publishing," the New Everyday is a web publication "between a blog and a journal" where "middle state" describes the point between the initial idea and the final published format. NYU Libraries' Digital Libraries Technology Services (DLTS) designed and developed the New Everyday as well as the current MediaCommons site.

Introducing LibX: The Bobst Library Edition

Recent years have seen a steady increase in the number of online tools intended to facilitate access to and organization of information. Some of these tools are focused on helping researchers manage the rapidly expanding universe of bibliographic and other scholarly data. Libraries — including NYU — have been working hard to simplify the management of research and bibliographic data though software and web-based solutions; this article focuses on LibX, a web browser extension that has proven useful to many NYU scholars.

Turnitin: Verifying Academic Originality

ITS is pleased to offer Turnitin's OriginalityCheck, a plagiarism detection tool available to any NYU or NYUAD instructor with a current Blackboard course shell. By verifying originality of work at student submission prior to grading, faculty are able to not only prevent plagiarism in their classes, but also encourage proper research and citation methods. Students submitting papers to Turnitin can rest assured that their privacy and security are well protected, and that they retain copyright of all original work created and submitted to Turnitin.
