Dr. Charles N. Bertolami, Herman Robert Fox Dean of New York University College of Dentistry (NYU Dentistry), has announced that effective September 1, the College will partner with Univision Communications Inc. (UCI) -- the leading media company serving Hispanic America -- to provide oral health content for Univision’s healthcare website, Univision Salud.

“NYU Dentistry welcomes the opportunity to increase its promotion of awareness of the importance of oral health among Hispanics in the U.S., who are experiencing increased oral health care needs,” said Dean Bertolami. “It is especially gratifying that our new partnership with Univision will enable us to more broadly share the College’s expertise among Hispanics – the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population -- by providing oral health information and education directly and in their native language.”

U.S. Hispanics are generally lagging behind other Americans in many aspects of oral health, according to a 2011 survey by the Hispanic Dental Association in collaboration with Crest® and Oral-B®. The survey found that many Hispanics across the U.S. do not have adequate oral health care, and that overall, Hispanics believe that more information about good oral health habits is a key factor in achieving and maintaining good oral health.

The NYU Dentistry-Univision partnership is designed to help address this challenge. Beginning September 1, the Univision Salud website will feature bimonthly oral health articles (in both English and Spanish) written by NYU Dentistry faculty members.

“The articles will all have a strong focus on prevention and be based on the best available peer-reviewed evidence,” said Dr. Analia Veitz-Keenan, Director of Evidence Based Dentistry at NYU, who is overseeing the topic selection.

Initial topics include “Everyday Habits That Harm Teeth,” “How Often Do I Have to Brush, Floss, and Other Common Dental Questions?” “Excessive Tooth Decay Can Be Life-Threatening for Kids,” “Orthodontic Care for a Beautiful Smile,” “Bad Breath – Causes and Cures,” and “Overcoming Dental Fears.”

NYU Dentistry experts will also provide health tips – “news you can use” – which deal with a range of topics for specific age groups. Examples might include “Keeping Children’s Teeth Healthy,” “Preventing Cavities,” “How Poor Oral Health Affects Diabetes,” “What to Do to Prevent Gum Disease,” “Leading a Smoke-Free Life,” “Caring for Your Dentures,” and “What is Dry Mouth and Why is It a Problem?”

“A partnership between the largest dental school in the US and the #1 Hispanic media company brings together expertise, credibility, and significant scale in delivering information to the Hispanic population,” said Dr. Juliana Kim, director of Digital Strategy and Business Development for Univision Digital and an adjunct faculty member in NYU Dentistry’s Department of Epidemiology & Health Promotion. “Educating Univision’s audience about oral disease prevention and health promotion will be an important first step in addressing oral health disparities among Hispanics.”

“We are excited to collaborate with Univision to deliver useful oral health guidance to the Hispanic community,” said Dr. Richard Niederman, professor and chair of NYU Dentistry’s Department of Epidemiology & Health Promotion and the editorial director for the NYU Dentistry-Univision partnership. “Going forward, our hope is to improve oral health both locally and globally with Univision.”

In addition to providing website content, NYU Dentistry’s experts will be featured in occasional Univision website videos on key oral health topics and in Univision TV stories focused on oral health. The outreach will also extend to personal stories designed to introduce Univision’s younger viewers to the field of dentistry. Bilingual Spanish-speaking students at NYU Dentistry will have the opportunity to write occasional articles about what led them to pursue careers in dentistry and about their experiences during oral health outreaches to Hispanic communities at the local, national, and global levels.

“This initiative aligns extremely well with NYU Dentistry’s commitment to improved public health through outreach on so many levels,” said Dean Bertolami. “Our goal is to raise the level of oral health for Hispanics by removing the language barrier through our partnership with Univision and thereby close. the knowledge gaps in oral health literacy.”
