Tisch Game Center Launches BFA Program


The NYU Game Center at the Tisch School of the Arts today announced the introduction of a bachelor’s degree in Game Design, available to undergraduate applicants starting in January 2015. Building on the Center’s successful MFA program in Game Design, launched in 2012, the BFA curriculum will encompass the NYU capstone core curriculum with concentrated instruction in the design, technology and culture of games.

The NYU Game Center at the Tisch School of the Arts today announced the introduction of a bachelor’s degree in Game Design, available to undergraduate applicants starting in January 2015. Building on the Center’s successful MFA program in Game Design, launched in 2012, the BFA curriculum will encompass the NYU capstone core curriculum with concentrated instruction in the design, technology and culture of games.

“The Game Center has enjoyed a steady evolution – first as a gamers’ community and study center, then as an MFA program and most recently, as a Brooklyn-based multi-disciplinary academic epicenter – so expanding to an undergraduate program seemed like the natural next step,” said Game Center Department Chair Frank Lantz, who together with faculty members Eric Zimmerman, Katherine Isbister, Clara Fernández-Vara, Bennett Foddy, Charles Pratt and Matt Parker, designed the curriculum. “Our mission has always been to educate the next generation of creative practitioners and critical scholars who will make games the focus of their professional lives, and we believe our particular approach and community are perfectly poised to help students take their place in this rapidly emerging sector of entertainment, business and scholarship.”

The Game Center estimates that there will be 20 students in the BFA program starting in January, and that the number will expand to 40 by fall of 2015. Over the next four years, the center anticipates adding another eight full-time professors in game design.

The new BFA program will build off of undergraduate courses currently offered through the Game Center, as well as through the former Polytechnic School of Engineering, which became the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering in January 2014. It will encompass game design from both the standpoint of developing a general understanding of games, as well as focusing on the specific skills required for designing games, including programming, visual design, audio design, and industrial marketing.

The NYU Game Center is housed at the multi-disciplinary MAGNET Center in downtown Brooklyn and encompasses faculty from various schools across the University, including Engineering, Tisch, the College of Arts and Science, and the Steinhardt School. Since its inception, the Game Center has become a critical hub for gamers and students in the New York City area, hosting lectures, events, competitions, and business incubator programs.
