June 18, 2014

Two filmmakers from New York University are among the winners in this year’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 41st Annual Student Academy Awards® competition. The 2014 winners—15 students in all representing 11 colleges and universities—were announced June 7 at a ceremony at the DGA Theater in Hollywood, CA.

Yulin Liu, who is pursuing an MFA in film at the Kanbar Institute of Film & Television at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, received the silver medal in the narrative category for her short film Door God. Zijian Mu, a masters student in News and Documentary at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, was awarded the bronze medal in the documentary category for One Child.

The NYU winners join a long list of past award recipients from the University, which includes Spike Lee and Cary Fukunaga. The awards were presented by actors Demian Bichir, Adrian Grenier and Nate Parker, along with the writing/directing/producing team of Jennifer Lee, Chris Buck and Peter Del Vecho, who earned Oscars® for “Frozen.”

The ceremony itself was the culmination of several days of events for the filmmakers, organized by the Academy. For more information about the awards, visit
