NYU Alums John Ridley and Steve McQueen Win Oscars for 12 Years A Slave

Two NYU alumni were honored at the 86th Annual Academy Awards, both receiving Oscars for their work on the same film, the critically-acclaimed historical drama 12 Years a Slave. Gallatin graduate John Ridley, (BA, ’87) received the award for Best Adapted Screenplay and Steve McQueen, who attended the graduate film program at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, accepted the Oscar for Best Picture, which he both produced and directed.

The Academy Awards recognize outstanding film achievements and are the most prestigious in the industry. Last night’s ceremony in Los Angeles included 12 alumni from across the University who received a total of 14 nominations.
