The program allows recent Ph.Ds in the humanities and humanistic social sciences to gain career-launching experience in areas such as arts management, communications, public administration, and digital media.

New York University graduates Jane Jones and Rachel Wimpee have been named Public Fellows by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), the New York-based organization announced.

The program, now in its third year, allows recent Ph.Ds in the humanities and humanistic social sciences to gain career-launching experience in areas such as arts management, communications, public administration, and digital media.

“ACLS developed the Public Fellows program to help expand the career horizons of recent Ph.Ds beyond the traditional academic trajectory. The response from recent graduates and partnering agencies alike has been remarkable and encouraged us to significantly increase the number of awards this year,” said Nicole Stahlmann, director of fellowship programs. “Indeed, we find that ACLS Public Fellows quickly become invaluable to their host organizations, which is a clear testament not only to the fellows’ talent and motivation but to the wide applicability of their Ph.D. training as well.”

This year’s 20 ACLS Public Fellows will take up two-year assignments at a diverse set of partnering organizations in the government and non-profit sectors. A full list of the 2013 ACLS Public Fellows and their placements can be found here.

Jones holds a doctorate in sociology from NYU’s Graduate School of Arts and Science and will work as a program analyst at BronxWorks, a nonprofit settlement house; Wimpee has a Ph.D. in French and French Studies from NYU’s Graduate School of Arts and Science and will serve as a program officer at the Rockefeller Archive Center.

The ACLS Public Fellows program is made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
