The New York University College of Nursing's [NYUCN] Advanced Nursing Student Organization [ANSO] held a “Holiday Drive for the Troops” in December, packing the goods donated by local businesses.  Among the items donated were:  80 pounds of Starbucks coffee; organic body products, such as lotion, shampoo, skin care items; beef jerky; batteries; and candy.

“ANSO Vice President and NYUCN Graduate Student Elizabeth Rogers' brother, Nicholas Rodgers, has been serving in the Army for three years, and is currently in Afghanistan on his second deployment,” said Cindy Lundberg-Lewis, Student Affairs Officer, NYU College of Nursing.

ANSO shipped 11 large care-packages, to Nicholas’s base in Afghanistan, each with an individual letter to the troops expressing gratitude for their service, and wishing them a healthy holiday season. This drive is part of the College of Nursing's Veteran and Military Service Initiative.

“As a proud Army sister and supporter of our troops, I am so amazed at the courage and sacrifice of the men and women serving in the various branches of the military,” said Elizabeth Rodgers, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program.  “Christmas time is especially hard for the troops because they are so far from home. The care packages are a wonderful way to send our love, encouragement, and support to troops serving overseas to give them a piece of home and let them know that we are thinking of them and praying for them.”

“With the help of the NYU College of Nursing community, we were able to send care packages to my brother and some of his fellow soldiers for Christmas to show our gratitude and appreciation for their service” Rogers added.  “As student leaders in the NYUCN community, ANSO's holiday drive was in the spirit of supporting our service men and women and thanking them during the holidays.”

NYUCN’s Veteran and Military Service Initiative is honored to work with veterans interested in earning their nursing degree to launch their nursing careers. NYUCN offers outstanding academic programs and comprehensive services, as well as a supportive team of faculty, administrators and staff who are committed to making sure our veterans get the most from their NYUCN experience.
