NYU’s Department of Biology has acquired a laser-scanning microscope that will enhance researchers’ ability to study morphogenesis--the process that causes an organism to develop its shape-- and the underlying genetic causes.

NYU’s Department of Biology has acquired a laser-scanning microscope, below, that will enhance researchers’ ability to study morphogenesis--the process that causes an organism to develop its shape--and the underlying genetic causes. NYU’s Department of Biology has acquired a laser-scanning microscope that will enhance researchers’ ability to study morphogenesis--the process that causes an organism to develop its shape-- and the underlying genetic causes.

Installed in the department’s Center for Developmental Genetics, the microscope enhances scientists’ ability to view live cells while, due to its relative low laser power, reducing the likelihood of damaging these fragile organisms.

The device—the TCS SP8 X, produced by Leica Microsystems—will see heavy use in the laboratory of Lionel Christiaen, an assistant professor in the Department of Biology. He studies how gene activities control and coordinate cell behavior during morphogenesis.
