NYU announced today that the firm of Mitchell|Giurgola Architects, LLP (M|G) has been selected to design the renovation of 370 Jay Street, the future headquarters for CUSP, NYU’s new applied science research center.

New York City-based M|G has more than 40 years of experience with complex design renovations, infrastructure upgrades, adaptive reuse projects, and interior fit-outs in the City. The firm’s design credits include science & research laboratories, large mixed-use buildings, and commercial office buildings. As a local firm, M|G also has a significant understanding of the City’s public approvals process and has worked extensively with New York City’s Board of Standards & Appeals, Public Design Commission, and Department of Buildings.
M|G is widely recognized for its work; the firm has received more than 75 professional honors, including the Architectural Firm Award & the Medal of Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects, Excellence in Design Awards from the Art Commission of the City of New York, and Chicago Athenaeum Awards for Excellence in Design.
In addition, M|G also has a proven record of success with NYU building projects. It recently completed a large-scale renovation of NYU’s School of Continuing & Professional Studies, which included classrooms, conference rooms, computer labs, and offices. M|G is also currently working on the design of NYU’s new physics laboratories within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
The design team will be led by M|G partners Carol Loewenson, FAIA; Paul Broches, FAIA; and Stephen Dietz, AIA.
Construction on 370 Jay Street is expected to be complete by 2017. Repurposing the long-dormant building will create a hub for science and technology that will connect the emerging tech community in Downtown Brooklyn with CUSP and NYU-Poly’s existing campus. Under current plans, 370 Jay Street will be transformed into classrooms, offices, and laboratory space for CUSP. An additional 40,000 square feet will be used as incubator space for technology-based businesses. The remaining space will be used for other NYU needs.
