Pop-up stores have become popular with retailers seeking to capitalize on a shopping season, such as Christmas and back-to-school, or simply to enhance their brand.
But pop-up, or temporary, newsrooms are spaces virtually unheard of in journalism…at least until this week.
Bedford + Bowery, an online news site produced by NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute in collaboration with New York magazine, launched a pop-up newsroom in Williamsburg this week. It will offer a temporary base of operations in Brooklyn as well as a venue for events—panel discussions, readings, workshops, and shows of local artists.
“Our mission is to open our work to the community by inviting neighbors to sit in on the interviews and discussions that would otherwise be conducted in private—between journalist and subject,” says Daniel Maurer, editor of Bedford + Bowery. “At The Newsroom, we'll show our subjects rather than just tell about them, while also documenting all events for publication online.”
The Newsroom will be open through the month of October; after that, Bedford + Bowery will continue to cover north Brooklyn out of the Carter Journalism Institute’s 20 Cooper Square location.
“We hope to enrich our stories in ways that can only be done in the physical realm, through live interaction,” adds Maurer. “It's one thing to read a Q & A with an author online and quite another thing to see that Q & A conducted live, in person, followed by a reading from the author's book and the opportunity to speak to them yourself.”
The Newsroom, located at 155 Grand St., near Bedford Avenue, has already planned a speakers’ series that will include: Lower East Side documentarian, gallerist, artist, and historian Clayton Patterson; punk-era chroniclers Emily Armstrong and Pat Ivers of Nightclubbing; legendary Brooklyn street artist Rostarr; Williamsburg novelist Bradley Spinelli; East Village musician and memoirist Rayya Elias; Lower East Side DJ and memoirist Brendan Jay Sullivan; new Village Voice editor Tom Finkel; and Bushwick novelist and publisher Maggie Craig.
Bedford + Bowery covers the East Village, Lower East Side, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick, and beyond.
